The Cinder Keeper

An Edwardian toi-et-moi, the old-cut diamonds catching the light along one edge and nowhere else. It is back-carved so the light enters from behind — the maker's quiet trick. It came to us from a house near Antwerp, still in the fitted box it was put away in. It asks very little of whoever wears it next and gives back a great deal.
